PPP and its leadership would continue to support the minorities: Mian Manzoor Wattoo

A delegation of All Pakistan Minorities Alliance led by Mrs. Najmi Saleem, Ex-MPA and Women Coordinator, Punjab, called on Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, PPP Punjab President here today and expressed Alliance’s total solidarity with the Pakistan People’s Party.
The delegation extended an invitation to the PPP President on behalf of the Chairman of APMA, Dr. Paual Bhatti for July 14 which is the date of the launching of the Alliance.
Punjab President accepted the invitation and said that he would certainly be present in the function because the PPP and its leadership considered the minorities and the women as its constituency.
The members of the delegation were highly appreciative of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari who took firm stand when places of worship of one of the minorities were attacked by the miscreants in Larkana and Hyderabad. He described these as attack on Ghari Khuda Bux
The members of the delegation assured that the minorities of Pakistan were with the PPP because its founding father was a great supporter of the empowerment of the minorities and he established a separate Ministry for this purpose.
Mian Manzoor Wattoo appreciated their feelings and said that the PPP and its leadership would continue to support the minorities as the equal citizens of Pakistan enjoying equal rights.
He recalled that PPP previous government reserved 5% quota for the minorities aimed at their social mobility along with enhanced representation in the Senate.
He further said that the religious festivals of the minorities were observed at the official level giving them the sense of participation and belongingness. He further said that August 11 was declared by PPP government as Minorities Day.
He appreciated the efforts of the minorities in the nation building process adding that the PPP would continue to strive for their betterment.
The other members of the delegation were Naveed Amer Giva, Ex- MPA, Haroon Salman Advocate,Co-ordinator APMA, Robbin Barkat, Co-ordinator and Nasreen Nobel, Women Coordinator, Lahore.

The Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act 2013 lauded by Jahanara M Wattoo

Ms. Jahanara M Wattoo, a provincial leader of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and head of PPP social media wing Punjab has lauded the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act 2013 describing it a “ great achievement”. She said bill would bring betterment in women’s life and eventually empower them.

She appreciated and congratulated the Sindh Assembly, Sindh Minister for Culture Sharmila Farooqi as well as provincial minister Rubina Saadat Qaimkhani, who presented the bill assembly last year and especially Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who was keenly involved in the whole process and very sensitive about women related legislation.

“It was a remarkable achievement and a historic day in Pakistan’s democratic history,” Ms. Jahanara M Wattoo said in a statement issued here from the PPP Punjab social media’s office.

“Pro women legislation are a clear manifestation of the priority of the Pakistan people’s Party under Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari”, she said.

Earlier in Punjab, Ms. Jahanara M Wattoo has launched a signature campaign and started an online petition on the instruction of Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari against the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII)’s recent legal advice to the legislature regarding the removal of the law banning underage marriage as well as the law regarding the second marriage of a man with the permission of his first wife. The PPP Punjab has also appealed to the various civil society groups, women’s organizations, media and human rights groups to join the campaign.

And now the Sindh Assembly is the first assembly in the country to pass a bill of this kind.

The Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act 2013 was passed in the provincial assembly on Monday, declaring marriage below the age of 18 punishable by law.

According to the new bill, in cases of underage marriage the parents, bride and groom can all be sentenced to three years in prison and can be fined with Rs 45,000.

The passing of the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Bill, 2013, by the Sindh Assembly is the landmark legislation of the province of Sindh that has taken lead and will serve an effective deterrence against the oppression of underage marriages, said Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, President Punjab PPP in a statement issued here today.
He congratulated the Party High command, members of the Sindh Assembly and the government of the province for the legislation that would cut the roots of discrimination against the women folk in particular.
It may be mentioned here that the Bill stipulates as a cognizable and non-boilable offence if marriage of a couple is solemnized below the age of 18 years entailing maximum three years rigorous punishment and not less than two years and the case must be decided within ninety days.
He recalled that the Pakistan People’s Party Women Wing launched a campaign against the child marriage in the recent past and protested against this in front of the Lahore Press Club, Lahore. The Women Wing of Punjab PPP also undertook a successful campaign to secure signatures of the civil society against the child marriage and the response was amazing.
He said that the Sindh Assembly passing of the bill against child marriage was the first dividend of the campaign of the PPP Women Wing, Punjab, and they were very happy over this development which was overdue.
He urged the other provincial governments of the federation to follow the the Sindh Provincial Assembly and legislate similar legislation because child marriage cruel practice was not Sindh specific but was prevalent throughout the country.
He expressed his confidence that with the passing of the law, and other provinces doing the same would enhance the image of the country at the international level and would also be instrumental in meeting international obligations regarding human rights Pakistan was one of the signatories.
He also maintained that the implementation of the law would bring qualitative change in empowering of the women segment of the society because they would be treated at par with the male citizens of the society
He assured full support of the PPP, Punjab, to facilitate the legislation in Punjab prohibiting the child marriages on the same analogy as in the province of Sindh.

Seminar: “Pakistan People Party’s Labour Movement and Privatization” on April 30

People’s Labour Bureau Lahore and Pakistan People’s Party are jointly holding a seminar titled “Pakistan People Party’s Labour Movement and Privatization” on April 30, 2014,at Lahore Press Club to pay tributes to the Chicago martyrs as a part of May Day functions.
It was decided in a meeting held here today under the chair of Milk Ahtesham-ul- Hassan, President PLB, Lahore, which was also attended by Ashraf Khan Sohna, Syed Khalid Bokhari, Rana Asher Nisar, Ch. Manzoor Ahmed and representatives of the trade unions.
In the seminar main speaker will be Syed Khurshid Shah, leader of Opposition in the National Assembly and Mian Manzoor Wattoo, President Punjab PPP, Senator Aitzaz Ehsan, Samina Khalid Ghurki and other leaders of the PLB.
In the seminar, the struggle of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and of workers for the rights of the labour in most inhospitable environment in the past will be highlighted.
The speakers will also reject the privatization policy of the government as being against the fundamental rights of the labour because its implementation would be like economic murder of the millions of the workers.
At the conclusion of the seminar, a declaration will be announced on Privatization followed by a procession from the Lahore Press Club to the Assembly Hall with banners depicting anti- privatization slogans and significance of May Day.
